FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How is HRA exemption calculated?
Exemption is the least of: (1) actual HRA received, (2) rent paid minus 10% of basic salary, or (3) 50% of basic (metro) / 40% (non-metro).
Do I need rent receipts?
Yes — for exemption above ₹3,000 per month you generally need rent receipts or a rent agreement, and the landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000.
Is HRA fully tax-free?
No — only the exemption amount is tax-free. Any HRA above the exemption limit is added to your taxable income.
